David Archuleta Retrospective Series Part Eighteen: Forevermore

By Pamela Pike and Rosanne Simuonvic

Pamela Pike's Recollections

Can some popular Filipino pop ballads from the 1980’s and 1990’s create that romantic evening with your special someone?  Love is such an exciting feeling that should be celebrated and decorated with words and feelings and David’s tribute of “Forevermore” to the Filipino writers give you a musical ecstasy you won’t forget.

Love songs have a way of capturing the heart and soul of our emotions and David’s vocal talent really rises to a vocal masterpiece of emotion.  This love song declares his undying affection; this song inspires you to love. Musically, this song is choice, striking, moving and full of emotion.

As soon as he is heard your breath quickens and a smile appears.  Within a fleeting moment his music connects you to our emotions and your heart goes on a journey to the moon.

Romance isn’t always about diamonds and roses sometimes it’s as simple as honesty and sincerity.  David’s singing is modest and magical and his love for music is tangible.

David envelopes each phrase with nimble precision, nuance and with his beautiful voice and sexy dimples he aims at your heart.  He can find a personality in a song and make it his own.

His plush flow of his vibrato vocal cords and his sultry vocals are strong and right on pitch.  His phrasing is crisp and he rides the melodies with perception with a silky sensuous sound.

David is boyishly handsome yet there is a maturity about David that holds adults as well as older teens and his voice and presence seems to stir the romantic imagination of his fans.

His voice is like no other, his technique is masterful, and has a unique quality that is engaging.  He just opens his mouth and beautiful sounds come out without relying on gimmicks. David’s singing brings out the romantic streak that is deep down inside all of us.

His Press Release Dated March 9, 2012 from Ivory Music & Video stated, “The album pays tribute to not only OPM but also to his countless fans who have been loyal throughout his career.  The album is a gift & labor of love to his devoted fans.  David wants his fans to know that he loves and appreciates them wherever he may go.  Forevermore.”

One hopes that after his two year Mission he returns to music, the sooner, the better, as;

There are times when I just want to look at your face......

Rosanne Simunovic's Recollections

David has an incredible knack for finding songs that we can all fall in love with!  And, Forevermore is a perfect example of this.

From the opening strains of this song, we are transported into a world of pure and complete love.  David's voice is so heartfelt and perfect for this song - he captures the emotion as one would capture a butterfly with a net - just sweeping the air gently until he can hold it in the palm of his hand and the stillness of his heart.

His clear head voice flawlessly ascends the scale-like passages in this song with no evidence of a break in his vocal range.   It just floats from his mouth so easily and, yet, we all know that there is a strong technical foundation guiding the entire vocal process.

And don't you love his expressive face and his subtle hand and arm movements throughout this number?  He exudes such a sincere and genuine charisma that one cannot help but fall in love with him and his artistic delivery of this song.

The gentle nuances, the exquisite phrasing, the clarity of the words, David's relaxed, yet passionate, demeanor gives this performance video a timeless quality, one to be savored in order to alleviate the trials and tribulations of everyday life.

However, it is also a joyful song, a tribute, to celebrate the happiest of occasions - like weddings or anniversaries!  A song for all seasons so to speak.

And, speaking of happy occasions, today - August 2nd- my husband and I are celebrating our 44th Wedding Anniversary and I can't think of a more appropriate and beautiful song to ring in this special day than David's version of "Forevermore"

On April 7, 2012, I had the privilege of reviewing this video performance and  "http://masterclasslady.com/2012/04/07/david-archuletas-inspiring-new-video-forevermore/"
"In the midst of all the singing competitions, if you feel that you need to be reminded about what a passionate and gifted singer sounds like, then press play on the video above.

I guarantee you that David Archuleta’s performance of his new song, “Forevermore” will move you in a very special way.

He sings like angel and communicates this song with sensitivity and artistry.

Those ascending scales in the melodic line are vocalized by David with expressive clarity and precision He really understands the importance of head voice – he moves up and down through the melodic line with pitch-perfect ease and consistent focus. His voice sounds seamless and pure at every step of the way during this performance.

Play this song before you head off to bed. David’s soothing voice will relax and inspire you before you sleep.

Or, if you are reading this during the day, then rest assured that this video will absolutely banish any level of stress you are presently experiencing."
Truer words never spoken!  David is an absolute treasure and, over time, his sublime talent will be recognized the world over. One cannot avoid excellence - it always rises to the top!

David Archuleta Retrospective Series Part Seventeen: The Star Spangled Banner/God Bless America

by Pamela Pike and Rosanne Simunovic

Pamela Pike’s Recollections

In the year of 1812, an attempt to take Baltimore the British attacked Fort McHenry, which protected the harbor.  After witnessing the bombardment, a young lawyer, Francis Scott Key wrote a poem from which the lyrics came for The Star Spangled Banner.

The song is a notoriously difficult one to sing. Thousands of singers have performed, “The Star Spangled Banner” only one person renditions blows me away and that’s David Archuleta.

For just a moment, let’s consider the musical skills of David Archuleta.

At every sport event a musician is asked to sing the National Anthem or God Bess America and more often than not they ruin it by forgetting lyrics and doing a bad job.  This song is difficult even for the most trained singer as it calls for an enormous vocal range.

The range of TSSB covers an octave and a fifth.  People tend to want to sing their hearts out without having to stretch to reach the higher notes. The song goes from the lowest extreme of the voice to the highest with an enormous melody.  The outcome is sharp pitchy notes and loud screeches.

David has shown the world how you are supposed to sing this song! It is usually performed a cappella with no accompaniment which hinders a singer to manage a pitch.  Very few people have perfect pitch except for David Archuleta which allows him to start in the right key.

Singing the anthem takes more than vocals and courage it takes focus.  Usually you have a great deal going on around you, fireworks and flyovers and stadium acoustics. Frank Sinatra once said the anthem was “a terrible piece of music.”

The key to David’s success is his sincerity, he doesn’t make the song about him, he shows some modesty, hits all the notes, thanks everyone and then walks away. He nails it every time!

The one rendition that I hear often from people is Whitney Houston’s at Super Bowl XXV in January 1991, many people find that most memorable, and as good as it may have been she lip-synched the performance.

David may change his renditions somewhat but always renders the integrity of the song from where it belongs, directly from his heart and soul.  He always instills great pride with his every performance.

Kate Smith (May 1, 1907 – June 17, 1986) was an American Singer, an Alto, best known for her rendition of Irving Berlin’s “God Bless America” which became her signature song. It is an American patriotic song written by Irving Berlin in 1918 and revised by him in 1938. Irving Berlin donated all royalties from the song to the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts ….he often said it was the most important song he ever wrote.

A far as I am concerned there are only two people that really know how to sing this song.   One was Kate Smith who passed away in 1979 and the ever present awe-inspiring David Archuleta.

David’s voice is glorious and he sings with such power and conviction, and over the last several years has given us rousing renditions and absolutely stunning performances with goose pimple effects.

David’s powerful voice echoes throughout stadiums and arenas.  He is always concerned with the words to his songs, and his simple but deeply moving words has taken on added meaning for all of us because of the way David sings them.

His dynamic voice carries his passion with great enthusiasm and his performances are so smooth and charismatic you are rendered speechless.

Rosanne Simunovic's Recollections

I honestly cannot comprehend how David continues to deliver meticulous, clean, pitch-perfect, LIVE performances time after time after time.

During this version of the Star Spangled Banner, he vocalizes this extremely intricate melody with musical precision, adding his subtle but clean soulful inflections to create one of the best performances of the American National Anthem I have ever heard.

The melodic range of this song is vast, tickling the lower range while challenging the singer to sustain powerful, upper-range vocals in last two-thirds of this song.

David, wisely, uses this opportunity to further sustain his extremely confident and technically secure upper range by changing the melody subtly to add increased drama and dignity to this signature anthem.
And it works, for during these special glorious moments, the crowd erupts and the fireworks explode!  There is moment after moment after moment during this song that only David and his sublime vocal gift can deliver.

If there is any doubt why technical study is so important for the longevity and success of a singer's career, this video pretty much eliminates the last residue of denial. Ha!  The whole purpose to becoming a great singer is to achieve a level of significance and longevity that can only be achieved through the perfect combination of technical and artistic skills.

David understands this and his stellar performance of "The Star Spangled Banner" is testament to this.

This statement is reinforced through his beautiful performance of "God Bless America", as featured in Videos #2 and #3 - the former at the tender age of 12 and the second as an adolescent in 2011.

Age is irrelevant here - David has a musical gift that has always been mature beyond his years. He is a true vocal prodigy and always envisions melodic entities that are absolute genius to the ear.

I love how he starts slowly and reverently during the opening strains of this number. By doing so, he reinforces the spiritual basis for this national treasure of a song.

However, David is an exceptionally expressive singer and, as he did during his performance of "The Star Spangled Banner", delivers a very nuanced, highly dynamic rendering of this hymn.

As the song moves along, his voice becomes more resonant, more passionate but still so resplendent with head voice. Because of this, he easily taps into exposing that pure, translucent head voice at the end of this song without a waver.  This is incredibly difficult to do after such an energetic and powerful performance. The control that David exhibits is absolutely remarkable.

I loved how he stretches the vowels in some of the words, to emphasize the meaning and heighten the expressive elements.  David also intelligently shapes his phrases so well - such a beautiful ebb and flow, exquisite highs and lows.

And, the arrangement is so gorgeous and inspired. I believe there are three key changes within this number and it adds so much dimension and power to the final product. But, without David's stellar technique, work ethic and artistic vision, the arrangement could never have risen to such extraordinary heights.

Bravo David!

David Archuleta Retrospective Series Part Sixteen: Wait Video

By Pamela Pike and Rosanne Simunovic

http://youtu.be/RY5P2aa7QP0

Pamela Pike’s Recollections

Almost everyone who has ever lost someone they really loved will remember them through the power of music; probably from a song that relates to a memorable moment in life frozen in time.  Music can hold a place in your heart for that loved one that is no longer here in the physical sense but with you always in spirit.

Filmed in Hong Kong on November 2, 2011 David Archuleta’s video “Wait” exemplifies a melody and charismatic energy that make him shine. “Wait is one of the bonus tracks from his Asian Tour Edition, “The Other Side of Down.”

David sings about the most anguished human experience with compassion and elegance; the loss of a close friend.  Not many songs can rob you of tears but with David’s sensitive side and a very imaginative and creative representation this song is a tear jerker.

There are solemn layers to this music video that is laden with sorrow and introspection but David gives it a sweet sentimentality. But as he grieves over someone lost keep those tissues in abundance. His singing is infectious, his sincerity no one can resist and his delivery heartfelt and heartwarming. He gives you the accelerated heartbeat with his golden vocals.

The Art of Music is through the arrangement of sound and it has a way of touching your soul like nothing else can.  David is a young man of priorities and this thought provoking video gave us some insight to what was to come.  An announcement of a two year mission for his church gave meaning to the video “Wait”.

Changing direction takes a lot of courage as you travel into the unknown.  David knows that it will open his eyes, mind and heart to opportunities that will enrich his life.  Changing direction gives you the opportunity to discover new things about yourself as well as see the beauty of others.  He wants to open his eyes and mind to the possibilities that are before him.

For David, the timing to change direction is as simple as wanting more out of life and wanting to start as soon as possible.

Rosanne Simunovic's Recollections

First of all, I would like to congratulate everyone associated with this video of "Wait" - from David, to the musicians, to the producer, actors, videographer, to name a few.
This was such a moving tribute to those who have experienced turmoil and indecisiveness in their daily lives. And who among us has not?

This video captures the anguish, the fear and, ultimately,  the courage it takes to take a risk and move into a new direction, be it in our personal or professional lives.

And, David has coped with this dichotomy his entire life.

On the one hand, he is the consummate musician and vocal artist - always reaching for the stars and performing with superlative technique and artistry. He loves to reach and inspire people through the gift of his voice, changing and moving them in a very profound way through his music.

And then on the other hand, David is also a very private, very spiritual person whose Faith has kept him centred and grounded. It has also made him a very humble and loving person who truly cares for those around him in a very special and meaningful way.

This is why this video is so powerful. David feels these lyrics - his emotional colors are so vivid and real, evoking enormous passion in the listener.

It hits a very personal chord in all of us and makes us realize that we are all struggling with problems in our daily lives. And, more important, that we are never alone.

His voice is so resonant and so focused but then, there is no surprise there. When one feels the music, internalizes it as well as David does in this song, then so many vocal problems are instantly resolved. Your voice becomes liberated because you are singing without restraint, baring your soul.

Take a lesson from the page of David Archuleta everyone. When you sing with and listen to your heart, all things are possible.

David Archuleta - Save Image As

The word technology refers to the making, modification, usage, and knowledge of tools, machines, techniques, crafts, systems, and methods of organization, in order to solve a problem, improve a preexisting solution to a problem, achieve a goal, handle an applied input/output relation or perform a specific function.

The word technology also has a definition that refers to the sum of ways in which social groups provide themselves with the material objects of their civilization. For the purposes of this post we will parallel this definition and apply accordingly.

Five years ago the words ctrl, alt, shift and save could have meant a military weapons exercise movement instead of a common energetic physical action on my computer.  Tumblr, twitter, vlogs were not a language generally practiced in my world.  Screen captures were obviously movies trailers that highlighted a specific scene within the story lines, and how does one bubble tweet? I still haven’t figured out that process.

It’s not that I don’t appreciate and enjoy these new techno applications as a matter of fact my cell phone never leaves my side.  A jeweled cover with a neck chain now adorns my iPhone so it’s easily accessible for those urgent messages from David Archuleta via Kari.  New tweets, retweets, quote tweets and the ever prominent Direct Message for those personal comments to or from your BFF tweeters have become necessary communication channels.  Trending is the front page of the web checking the pulse of the nation and letting you know what’s happening, but be careful there is also twitter jail.  I imagine my twitter avatar being held hostage until I promise not to mention David Archuleta #2014 for a least five minutes. How unreasonable!  Censorship is not cool!

Why would they feel we need a break on tweeting about David?  It’s basically the same we talk about, his hair, i.e. fluffy, short, and long, his big smile always present, his eyes, the golden speckles and how beautiful they are.  Of course, his voice is like no other and his clothes take an overall twitter or two to describe.

Videos and pictures are mainstream David Archuleta conversation topics……..we don’t have enough pictures of David at concerts or Book/CD events so we collage pictures and use instagram to enhance them.  My personal opinion David needs no enhancing and I like the pure shot you can get from your camera without the embellishment. Artistically and creatively I see the desire and the necessity in many posters and ads for effectiveness of merchandising.

Pictures are our life blood as much as his concert videos and I have learned quickly to master the Save Image As button on my computer. Youtube downloading has also been a challenge at times, why do they keep changing the format?  I just figure out where everything is and how it works and then they make it better, or so they say.  Save Image As is always present and keeps David’s pictures readily available and at a right click moment I know I can always view, copy and save them quickly.

Looking back a few years my transistor radio provided me with the enjoyment of all the music I hungered for with a countdown.  The radio, what a relic and the 9 volt battery that needed to be replaced quite often was expensive back then.  Leaving it on all night under my pillow didn’t help……there was no just charging it like we do today with our iPods.  I can tell you that if David was a singer back then he would have been on the radio and his music would have played every day.  I miss having his good music not in the forefront of the radio media industry.

Who would have thought that a sweet 16 year old with an Angel voice and a heart of gold would change the life of so many people?   I love David Archuleta, I know that word is thrown around quite often and perhaps to some it doesn’t always hold the same connotation as it once did.  We love food, places, things, and people but not in the same way.

Love is expressed as an action and experienced as a feeling. Yet, love has an essence that resists defining in any single way; it encompasses compassion, determination, endurance, support, faith, and much more.  Love cannot be pigeonholed it's never just or only one thing; it happens whenever your heart is open to receiving beauty and wonder of people, things and events around you.

I admire David Archuleta, I am in awe of him for he has a strong sense of values that he refuses to bend or break and maintain his integrity regardless of his celebrity status; and in the midst of setbacks has accomplished his dreams with humility.

Fans expectations may not be his as there are many who hope he changes when he returns from his mission.  David is excited to learn who he will become when he returns; will he be different, of course, will he loose the qualities we all admire? I think not.  I like David just the way he is and prefer to say I am interested in seeing David pass from one phase to another and develop as any young man would give the same life’s experiences.   My expectations are to allow him to be himself, accept him as he is, not as many may want him to be.

Less than one year away and we will have the opportunity to find out the road David will take and no matter which direction he takes my internal GPS will support and follow.

David Archuleta Retrospective Series Part Fifteen: Fields of Gold

By Pamela Pike and Rosanne Simunovic

 Pamela Pike’s Recollections

This song is about savoring those precious memories of time well spent with the ones you love in this life.

“Fields of Gold” is a 1993 song by Sting from his album “Ten Summoner’s Tales.”  In January 1996 Eva Cassidy recorded “Fields of Gold” at Blues Alley which was well received when it was released in May 1996.  Sting’s recording was brought to life with Eva’s soul stirring cover with pure vocals and her own guitar arrangement. It was six months later that Eva Cassidy succumbed to melanoma, a deadly form of skin cancer.

The world needed to hear Eva Cassidy’s voice so a determined group of people posthumous released a studio album, “Eva By Heart”. A year later a California record company compiled music from all three of her CD’s and named it “Songbird” which was released internationally and became a posthumous success.

It was at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics when David Archuleta was eleven he first heard “Fields of Gold’, sung by Eva Cassidy as Michelle Kwan skated her magnificent performance.
As he listened to Eva sing with emotion and sensitivity, a young David became drawn to an artist that would become a major influence musically and teach him how a song can be sensitive and lyrically expressive.

Eva’s spiritual quality poured out in song with a sense that she was given a gift that was meant to be shared, to be passed on to others.  David has embraced her quality through the shear depth and passion that his music evokes with the ability to open our hearts to the majesty of our Maker.
The first time I heard David sing “Fields of Gold” it was his control and phrasing that was spellbinding, and the connection in his vibrato, timing, and a volume of his voice that was beyond tangible earth.

There is something about his voice that’s personal…..his voice is a kind of audible kiss.
He brought sweetness and a delicacy to “Fields of Gold.” His voice encompasses such a deep range of emotions and there’s a great intelligence and wisdom in his singing.

His voice is so pure and full of emotion I cry each time I hear this song.  He brings new depth with his soul stirring vocals and mesmerizes you while he put his incredible heart and soul into every word with such emotion he brings you to tears.

A pure and innocent yearning in his voice cuts through to your soul. There’s richness to his voice and clarity to all of his inflections.

The measure of a great singer is getting a message across and inspiring us.  David is a master at never leaving you untouched, there is always something in the humanity of his voice.

Rosanne Simunovic's Recollections

In reviewing this beautiful performance by David, I must confess that I never heard this song before. Well, as the saying goes: "There is no time like the present" and what a present this was to my heart and soul.

I am not surprised that the late Eva Cassidy was a source of inspiration for David. She sang from a place so deep, so profound, so spiritual that it was hard for any artist to try and capture the identical emotional impact of this song - or any of her songs - in performance.

Except for David.

Yes, in performing this song, David travels deep inside his soul, selflessly sharing with us his deepest thoughts and emotions.

Vocally, this was David at his best - impeccable phrasing, long, stretched and cohesive phrases and keen vocal focus.

His head voice, whether pure or full, was always front and center. The song rests extremely high in his vocal range, but one never senses that David has to strain or "reach for" the notes.

Rather he sings "over" the upper notes, moving them forward toward his vocal masque and, then, toward his listeners.

As a result, his vocal projection is consistent, always basking in the glow of the forward momentum that is so integral to the ebb and flow of any song, especially a ballad.

My only disappointment was that I could not understand the lyrics and had to search for them online. The video featured above, although most welcome, didn't really capture the full extent of his vocal performance.  As a result, the lyrics were unclear, especially in the first half.

Nonetheless, David performed this song with sensitivity and finesse.  And, although this is not a complex song, it is one that is meant to inspire and move us. It is extremely spiritual in nature and, through David's inherent soulful nature, this song has found a new home, a new messenger in him.
